Hyperbaric Chamber
You rest inside a soft chamber pressurized to about 1.3 atmospheres, roughly 30% above normal. That is different from medical hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which uses hard-shell chambers at 2.0 atmospheres or more for specific medical conditions.
Not offered yet. This modality is part of our full center plan and is not available at Calhoun yet. Join the list and we will tell you the day it opens. The open floor is ready now.
How it works
The science, in plain English
More oxygen dissolves in blood
Under pressure, more oxygen dissolves into the liquid part of your blood. A mild chamber raises it only slightly, while medical chambers raise it a great deal.
Oxygen and new blood vessels
At medical pressures, repeated sessions raise growth signals that help new small blood vessels form. That research uses hard-shell chambers and should not be assumed at mild pressure.
Mild pressure and metabolism
Research on mild pressure describes better oxygen use and signals for making mitochondria, mostly in animals. Human data are very limited.
What the research suggests
Potential benefits
More oxygen during the session
Pressure does raise dissolved oxygen while you are inside. That the effect happens is well established, not that it benefits healthy people.
Exercise recovery
One small study of 12 athletes at 1.25 atmospheres found less fatigue and faster recovery of blood markers, with no placebo group.
Healthy aging markers
A study of 35 older adults in a hard-shell chamber reported longer telomeres. This has not been shown at mild pressure.
Quiet rest
Many people find a session calming, but research has not shown it relaxes you more than resting would.
How we grade the research. Stronger evidence means several controlled trials or a meta-analysis. Promising means some controlled trials with small or mixed results. Early research means small, lab or animal studies. Limited evidence means little or no independent research.
How it helps you
Where it fits in your plan
Every session is logged next to your labs, brain map and body scan, so at your 90-day re-test you can see what actually moved.
You want a new recovery tool
Mild sessions are an option being studied, as long as you treat a series as an experiment and not a proven fix.
You want your own data
Track sleep, energy or training numbers before and after a series and judge from your results, not the marketing.
You need to unplug
A session gives you about an hour to lie down in a quiet, calm space.
Session protocol
What to expect
Session length
About 60 minutes.
Frequency
No wellness schedule has been established. We set a trial series with you and measure it.
How it feels
Your ears fill with pressure like a plane descending. You clear them by swallowing or yawning.
Before your first session. Do not use the chamber with a collapsed lung. Talk with your physician first if you have a cold or sinus congestion, ear problems, asthma or COPD, a seizure disorder, claustrophobia, recent eye surgery, or are pregnant or on certain chemotherapy drugs. No supplemental oxygen is used inside a soft chamber.
Straight talk
What the research does not show
Test first. Guess never. A mild chamber is not medical hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and research from hard-shell chambers does not carry over. The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society knows of no reliable evidence that pressure below 1.4 atmospheres has a therapeutic effect. We make no claims about treating concussion, wounds or any disease.
